In the book Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer is about a nine year old boy named Oskar Schell. His father died on September 11, when the Twin Towers fell. His dad left these last few words and Oskar keeps them as if they are sacred. He then finds a key within an envelope that says "Black". He believes it is some type of message, but on this journey he tries to find a way that can help him move on with his life and not be grieving for the rest of his life for his father's death. As children we say out all of our feelings, but as we grow up we start to keep all of our feelings within us.
In the beginning of the book when Oskar was remembering all the moments that he had with his father, he used to be happy and would express himself with everything. He was what you would consider a happy child. He was always so happy because he would have at least one parent that would understand him through all the things that Oskar as curious about. He learned to talk through all his problems and to never stop looking for an answer. For example, in the book it said, "I desperately wish I had my tambourine with me now, because even after everything I'm still wearing my heavy boots, and sometimes it helps to play a good beat." I think that with this quote Oskar is trying to say that his tambourine is like his father. His father was there to comfort him when he was still a child and when his father was still alive, like his tambourine. With his father he was able to tell him his feelings and all the problems he had, that way he doesn't feel like he has a huge burden on top of him. At this moment, Oskar hadn't known what it was like to cope with problems by himself; he was still a child.
Later on in the book when he finds the key, Oskar sets himself on a journey. At this point in the book, his father died and he feels that no one understands what he is going through. So, he goes to find where this key belongs to and lies about what he is doing; before his father died he had never lied to anyone. For example in the book it says, " The next morning I told Mom that I couldn't go to school, because I was too sick. It was the first lie that I had to tell." With growing up we lose that innocence that we used to have, we were clean of anything sinful. Once we start to live more on this planet, we realize that nobody is really good and we start to be influenced by them. We act the way we are because of the people that we are surrounded by, but if who we are with are different then we are bound to be different also. For example, in the book , the mom tries to almost fake that she doesn't miss her husband, but actually she does. So in some ways, she is teaching Oskar to not express what you are feeling and keep it within you. Oskar has been living without the presence of his father for more than a year, and is trying to understand everything that is going on by himself without the help of anybody. His mom is with Ron, a friend supposedly, but Oskar thinks that he is more than just a friend. His grandma is probably the only one that is by his side, but not always. She lives close to him, but not exactly close. She doesn't live close to Oskar, because he doesn't know exactly what Oskar is going through. Therefore Oskar hurts himself by keeping all his emotion within him and not sharing them with anybody at all.
In conclusion, I think that this occurs with absolutely anybody, even including me. This occurs to everybody because we start to think that we can't rely and trust everybody because of the way that they seem and what some have shown to us. In addition, many people think that nobody understands what we are feeling, we can't confide in anyone but ourselves. Sometimes many people think that they are too good to trust anyone else, but the fact is that we always need help from others. Probably they haven't gone through the exact moment as we have, but they have probably had the same feeling before. For example, in the book Oskar believes that nobody understands the dysphoria he is going through, but on the journey he realizes that people also are sad and have troubles. He starts to relieve the pain from people and starts to slowly find peace within himself. So we need to trust people as we are growing up to help us with the obstacles that we are going through.
